sugar & spearmint lip scrub {diy}

So if you've been hanging around a while, you've probably already figured out that I'm kind of a hippie.
Not the commune living, dreadlocks wearing, hacky sacking kinda hippie (not yet anyway), but more of a simple, natural, organic food/cosmetics/life kinda hippie. Since the majority of products in stores don't cater to the simple, natural, organic philosophy (especially without costing an arm and a leg), I usually end up making my own. Which, luckily, I love doing. Especially when it comes to bath and body products. (See my texturizing sea salt hair spray HERE, peppermint foot oil HERE, and lavender salt scrub HERE)

About this time every year, my skin/hair/nails/lips revolt. They are completely over the dry winter air and are dreaming of coconut oil lotions and sandy beaches. (OK, the last part may just be my brain, but I'm sure the rest of my body would be on board). I thought I'd help out my dry, chapped lips and make a simple lip scrub. You need spearmint essential oil, coconut oil, and sugar. Spearmint is an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic...and super refreshing. After this, your lips will literally feel minty fresh. Then we have coconut oil, one of nature's best moisturizers. Most commercial lotions contain water (among other crazy ingredients)...once that water evaporates, you're left with dry skin again. Coconut oil not only provides moisture, but seals it in. And it's gentle (and delicious). Lastly, we have simple white sugar which helps to exfoliate any flaking/dry skin.

 This mixture is pretty amazing. Just smear it on at night before bed, massage it in, wash it off, and enjoy your super soft kisser. (And if you're like me, you can take the oil left on your fingers and rub it all over your hands/cuticles/hair, and inhale all the coconut goodness while imagining you're on the beach somewhere. Anyone else suddenly craving a piña colada?)

Here's what you need:

*1/4 tsp 100% spearmint essential oil (peppermint or wintergreen would be nice too. read the label and make sure it's 100% pure oil, nothing else added.)
*1 tbsp coconut oil (look for extra virgin, that has not been hydrogenated, bleached, refined or deodorized, and organic if possible)
*1-2 tbsp sugar

1. Mix together all the ingredients in a small bowl.
2. Use your fingers to mix. This will help heat up the coconut oil. At this point, you can feel free to add more sugar. More sugar = more exfoliating.
3. Using circular motions, gently massage scrub into lips for about 30 seconds. rinse off. enjoy your super soft lips. Hint: The scrub will harden at room temp, so just run the closed container under warm water to soften.

Store in airtight container at room temp.
